Founded by Peter Roberts and his wife Anna in 1967, CIWF is headquartered in the United Kingdom and has offices in the United States, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Poland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Sweden and many other countries. As a farm animal welfare charity officially recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, CIWF speaks in many important decision-making forums, and provides advice and policy advice to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the European Commission, and others.
CIWF is committed to the sustainable development of global agriculture and the environment. For more than half a century, CIWF has played a huge role in EU animal welfare legislation, making the EU ’s farm animal welfare a leading position in the world. This includes banning the use of barren shelf-type cages in laying hen production in Europe and the use of calves and sow pregnancy pens that restrict the movement of calves.
CIWF works with world-renowned food companies, producers, retailers, breeding companies and the food service industry to improve the quality and safety of livestock products by implementing efficient and well-fed feeding systems, and to promote the development of farm animal welfare in China. Since 2013, CIWF has cooperated with the International Cooperation Committee for Animal Welfare (ICCAW) of the China Council for the Promotion of International Cooperation in Agriculture. Through the establishment of the Farm Animal Welfare Award, it encourages manufacturers and companies to improve the welfare standards of pigs, broilers and laying hens. The awards include the Welfare Farming Good Pig Award launched in 2014, the Welfare Farming Good Egg Award and Welfare Farming Golden Rooster Award launched in 2017. These awards recognize Chinese companies' efforts to improve animal welfare, food safety and environmental standards, and encourage companies to bring higher welfare practices to farm animal production.
